Hello, my name is Zoe Crist. I am an artist and bladesmith. I have been making knives and Damascus steel since 1988. The passion for Damascus to me is like nothing else. It is pure magic the way two different metals become one and the subsequent patterns produced. After years of hobby knife-making, I became a full-time knife-maker and Damascus steel maker in 2009.
I am also a welder, machinist, mechanic, music engineer, farmer, sculptor, father, and husband.
All my steel work is sole authorship. I forge all my own Damascus and the blades are forged to shape before the grinding begins. All heat-treating is done in house.
I am an Apprentice Member of the American Bladesmith Society.
Mentors/Influences:
ABS Masrtersmith, Don Fogg is the singly most influential maker for me since I became serious about Damascus in 1999. He has been a great mentor and friend. In 2009 I studied at the New England School of Metalwork in Auburn, ME with Don Fogg and Burt Foster. After years of knowing Don through countless emails and phone-calls, it was an absolute honor to spend a few weeks in his company as a teacher and friend.
I would also like to acknowledge the many other great knife makers who have mentored me and encouraged me along my journey:
Jason Knight, Burt Foster, Wally Hayes, Edmund Davidson, Kevin Casey, Daniel Warren,
Bill Wiggins
